Volunteerism at the Y – Celebrating Our President’s Award Winners
At the Y, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. Every day, they selflessly give their time and talents to support our programs, advocate for community needs, and uplift those around them. This past month, we had the privilege of celebrating an outstanding group of individuals at our annual President’s Awards—the highest honor we bestow upon our volunteers.
From mentoring young people in afterschool programs to supporting wellness initiatives, these award recipients have made a lasting impact across our association. The stories shared at the event are nothing short of inspiring. Honorees like Mike Hamel, who has dedicated decades to serving through the Basket Brigade Program, and Tim Owens, whose leadership and generosity have fueled our growth, remind us of the power of service. Stephanie Douglas launched the Teal Pumpkin Party, which has grown to serve hundreds of kids in the Capital Region who suffer from life-threatening food allergies. Mark Audino has dedicated countless hours of his time to support our Circle of Champs program, serving kids facing life-threatening illnesses and their families. Orville Abrahams started the African Heritage Parade, which celebrates the African diaspora and sees a larger crowd of participants and supporters year-over-year.
These are just a few of the amazing stories that we will hear this coming Tuesday.
Volunteering at the Y is more than just an act of service—it’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than oneself. Our volunteers provide mentorship to young people who need guidance, offer companionship to seniors who seek community, and help families access programs that support their well-being. Without them, our ability to serve the Capital District would be significantly diminished.
One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteerism is the relationships that are built along the way. Volunteers often tell us that they gain as much from the experience as they give, forming deep and lasting connections with the people they serve and fellow volunteers. Their commitment not only enriches the lives of those they help but also strengthens our entire YMCA family.
Volunteerism is not just about lending a hand—it’s about strengthening the bonds that hold our community together. If you’ve ever considered giving back, now is the perfect time to get involved. Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to a long-term role, your time and passion can make a real difference.
To all our volunteers—past, present, and future—thank you. The Y thrives because of you.
