Interconnected: Black History, Our Nation's History, and the YMCA

February is Black History Month. Black History is American History.  Black leaders have played a significant role in shaping our nation's history, but also the history of the YMCA movement. Pioneers like Carter G. Woodson, Dr. Leo B. Marsh, and Quentin R. Mease dedicated their lives to education, leadership, and youth empowerment, leaving a lasting impact on communities nationwide.

Carter G. Woodson: The Father of Black History Month

In 1915, at the Wabash Avenue YMCA in Chicago, Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. He wanted to make sure Black achievements were recognized and celebrated. His efforts led to Negro History Week, which later became Black History Month. Thanks to Woodson, Black history became an essential part of education and cultural awareness.

Quentin R. Mease, Dr. Leo B. Marsh and the Black Achievers Program

Fast forward to 1954—Dr. Leo B. Marsh became the first Black president of the Association of YMCA Secretaries. Then, in 1971, he expanded the Black Achievers program at the Harlem YMCA. Originally started in Houston by Quentin R. Mease, this initiative helped Black teens boost their academics, confidence, and career goals. Under Marsh’s leadership, it grew into a national movement.

A Lasting Impact

Today, the YMCA's expanded Black and Latino Achievers program supports more than 10,000 young people nationally. The Capital District YMCA proudly continues this legacy through our own Black and Latino Achievers program, ensuring that young people in our community have the resources and support they need to succeed.

The work of Woodson, Marsh, and Mease reminds us how vital education, mentorship, and community support are. Their influence continues to inspire and uplift new generations. Black History is American History.  I am personally and professionally proud to carry their work forward here at the Capital District Y. Happy Black History Month.
