Youth Development is Where the Y Shines

At the Capital District YMCA, we believe in the transformative power of youth development—and few programs reflect that better than Youth and Government. Founded right here at the Albany YMCA in 1936, this powerful initiative has grown into a nationwide movement, now active in all 50 states and Washington, DC.

Just last month, teens from our region participated in the annual Assembly at the New York State Capitol, where they debated bills, crafted legislation, and stepped into roles as senators, assembly members, judges, and lobbyists. Held in real chambers of government, these sessions give students the unique opportunity to learn how democracy works—by doing the work themselves.

Through Youth and Government, young people develop essential life skills: public speaking, written and oral communication, leadership, and teamwork. Many are inspired to pursue careers in politics, law, public service, or advocacy. The program is more than a simulation—it’s an empowering experience that helps shape confident, informed, and engaged citizens.

Another exciting youth initiative we’re proud to highlight this month is Healthy Kids Day, taking place on Saturday, April 26. This national YMCA celebration is a fun, free event designed to help kids and families stay active and healthy all summer long. Every Capital District YMCA location will host activities like bounce houses, petting zoos, games, healthy snacks, and visits from local first responders. And to help more families experience the Y community, we’ll be waiving the joiner’s fee for all new members who sign up that day.

These are just two timely examples of how the YMCA is helping young people build bright, healthy futures. Thank you for being part of our mission and for supporting the next generation of leaders.

More than 800 Youth and Government Participants from Across NYS Converged at the State Capitol on March 22

The Capital District YMCA Youth and Government contingent was among the 800+ students gathered at the Capitol in March to present and vote on proposed legislation, engage in civic discourse, and experience the awe of being in the NYS Assembly chambers where our state legislators do their important work.

Check out what some of our teens had to say about their experience at the New York State Capitol, and what the Youth and Government program has meant to them.
