Lifeguard Appreciation Day: Celebrating Our Y Heroes

Lifeguard lies down on the edge of an indoor pool and reaches out to assist a swimmer

On July 31, the Capital District YMCA joins communities around the world in celebrating International Lifeguard Appreciation Day. This day honors the dedicated lifeguards whose training, vigilance, and quick response help keep our pools, camps, and swim lessons safe every day. Their commitment allows thousands of members to learn, play, and build confidence in and around the water, making them an essential part of the YMCA community.

Work That Leaves A Lasting Impact

Lifeguards embody the core values of the Y: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Their hard work and dedication don't go unnoticed by members.

"I was in the pool and could feel myself having a hypoglycemic reaction, so I got out and sat on the bench. I don't know how the lifeguards noticed I wasn't okay, but they came right up to me and asked what I was wrong. I told them, and they offered to call 911. I wasn't that low, but they still went and got me a granola bar to help. Their vigilance was astounding." - Glenville member

"I was trying to get out of the pool, and I fell. I have bad knees and was struggling to get up, and Kyle (lifeguard) came right over and got me up. He did it without hesitation." - Community member

"I personally have some great memories with a variety of different lifeguards, but I'm also now bringing my granddaughter for swim lessons. So now I'm seeing them in a whole new light. Lots of great memories." - Greenbush member

Lifeguards Support Vital Aquatics Programs

Simply put, without lifeguards, our pools wouldn't function. Without them, members wouldn't be able to enjoy:

  • Swim lessons for all ages, with a focus on water safety and drowning prevention
  • Open swim and aquatic fitness classes that promote healthy lifestyles
  • Lifeguard courses and first aid certifications, mentoring the next generation of lifesavers

"We need more lifeguards! They go above and beyond and are the reason we get to enjoy our classes and programs. Extra lifeguards allow us to have more participants in our classes." - SSY and Glenville member

Today and everyday, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated lifeguards who help keep our community safe, creating an environment where members and families can enjoy the water with confidence, trust, and peace of mind.
